Moving List

Please print these out and use them as a guide before, during and after your move.

TWO MONTHS BEFORE

___ List possessions.
___ Remove unnecessary items from attic, basement, closets and other storage areas.
___ Determine the items you want to keep, donate or sell.
___ Gather estimates from three moving companies.
___ Call insurance agent to find out if move is covered.
___ Create a file for moving papers and receipts.
___ Find out if any part of move is tax-deductible.
___ Arrange to have children's school records transferred.
___ Try to use things that won't be taken with you (cleaning supplies, frozen foods, etc).

IMPORTANT ITEMS TO GATHER FOR PACKING:

___ Boxes - Supermarkets and computer stores are good sources for these.
___ Plastic bags
___ Newspapers
___ Packing tape
___ Markers
___ Bubble wrap
___ Tissue paper

SIX WEEKS BEFORE

___ Get information on health-care professionals and hospitals near new home.
___ Complete a change of address card at the post office for the following:
___ Banks
___ Charge cards
___ Doctors and dentists/HMO
___ Friends and relatives
___ IRS/Social Security Administration
___ Insurance broker, lawyer, CPA and stockbroker
___ Religious organizations
___ Magazines
___ Schools
___ Hold a garage sale or donate items to charities.
___ Choose moving company - ask them about insurance coverage.

ONE MONTH BEFORE

___ Begin packing.
___ Contact gas, electric, water, telephone, cable TV, trash collection and other services for disconnect at current home and connect at new home. Ask for final billings.
___ Notify gardener and others who work regularly on home.
___ Request refunds on unused renter's/homeowner's insurance and any prepaid services.
___ Notify landlord and request security deposit refund.
___ Contact insurance companies (auto, homeowner's, medical and life) to arrange for coverage in new home.

THREE WEEKS BEFORE

___ Notify Department of Motor Vehicles of new address.
___ Arrange for childcare on moving day.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE

___ Review arrangements with moving company.
___ Arrange special transport for pets, plants, jewelry and other delicate items.
___ Service car if planning a long trip.
___ Cancel newspaper delivery.
___ Get a copy of pet records from veterinarian.

ONE WEEK BEFORE

___ Pick up dry cleaning, return library books, rented videos, etc. Settle all outstanding bills with local retailers.
___ Have two weeks' of prescription medication, if necessary.
___ Drain gas and oil from power equipment.
___ Prepare detailed directions to both old and new homes for moving company. Include an itinerary with emergency numbers.

A FEW DAYS BEFORE

___ Finish packing.
___ Defrost refrigerators and freezers.
___ Disconnect all major appliances.
___ Contact moving company for any updates.
___ Pack first night items. Include sheets, towels, toiletries, phone, alarm clock, change of clothes and flashlight.

MOVING DAY

___ Be home to answer any questions mover may have.
___ Record all utility meter readings.
___ Stay until movers are finished.
___ Complete information on bill of lading and carefully read document and inventory sheet prior to signing.
___ Keep copies of bill of lading and inventory until your possessions are delivered, the charges are paid, and any claims are settled.
___ Take one final look around.
___ Give movers the directions to new home and an emergency number (like a cell phone number).

AT YOUR NEW HOME

___ Be at new home to welcome the movers and to answer any questions.
___ Unpack first night items.
___ Reconcile items with inventory sheet.
___ Check for damaged or missing items.
___ Pay for movers.
___ Place moving and other important documents in a safe place.
___ Go to the post office and collect held mail.
___ Welcome Home!

PACKING TIPS FOR YOUR MOVE

___ Label boxes as you pack them including where they should go in your new home.
___ Pack heavy items in small boxes.
___ Wrap breakables in newspaper, bubble wrap, clothes or towels.
___ Leave lamps, china, artwork and other breakables for professional movers to pack.
___ Don't overstuff boxes, leave some extra room at the top.
___ Never pack jewelry, important papers or medicine.
___ Tape cords underneath all electrical appliances.
___ Don't tape furniture doors and drawers - tape damages them.
